Yarn is the primary component of knitting and crocheting. The most desirable yarn is wool due to its warmth and softness. There're many kinds of wool: chunky wool, cotton wool, cashmere wool, lambs wool and alpaca wool.
When buying a yarn, the number of plies refer to the number of spun fibers that are twisted together, single-ply, 2-ply, 4-ply and so on. The ply doesn't necessary indicate the yarn weight.
Beyond the yarn weight, quality of wool can be gauged through its fiber diameter and staple length (length of fiber). The smaller the diameter, the softer the wool. The longer the staple, the easier for fibers to spin.
